When she was 95 years old, Jennie Thlunaut, Shax'saani
Keek', last of the traditional Chilkat weavers from
Klukwan, Alaska, taught a Chilkat weaving workshop in
Haines, Alaska in 1985. In honor of Jennie and the gift
she shared, several participants of the workshop formed
the "Shax'saani Keek' Weavers' Circle and began
meeting annually to share techniques, enjoy comraderie,
inspire one another, and to teach aspiring students
the art of Chilkat weaving. The Circle continues to
grow, slowly and surely.
The print has juxtaposed images: Jennie's face replaces
the original person from a photo by Winter & Pond
taken at the turn of the century (the tunic was probably
woven by one of Jennie's relatives), and images of some
of the present-day Chilkat weavers replace the woven
Chilkat faces on the tunic. The juxtaposition of all
the images is to acknowledge the perpetuation and continuation
of Chilkat weaving through Jennie Thlunaut to current
and future generations; she wears a tunic woven from
the past with images of present-day weavers "woven"
into the garment.
